Learning to Love Your Natural Texture....

Think back to when you decided to embrace and love your natural hair. You probably, like many new naturals, had some preconceived notions about what your natural hair will look and feel like. If you are any like me and like many others, you probably imagined yourself with certain type of curl pattern, look, and feel, and then it happened: you were met with probably the exact opposite of want you thought you wanted and you were ready to retreat, give up, and go back to relaxed hair.

I can definitely relate to that experience... Are you ready for my Natural Hair Truth:  I didn't feel beautiful with my natural hair… I felt ugly, I didn't feel feminine, and I felt like I was lacking that something extra to make me pop and make me shine... There was no hiding with my natural hair, no bangs, no Aaliyah type swoop, it was just me... Bare!! I'm not sure if any one else felt that way or are currently feeling this way, but I didn't love my natural hair texture. I was finding ways to manipulate it, stretch it, and will it into what I thought it should be. Through my experience, I finally figured out what was holding me back from loving my hair and truly loving myself. If you are having a hard time Loving your Natural Hair Texture, keep reading for some tips on how to turn your hair frustrations into your very own hair passion.

There are three things that hinder Naturals from loving their natural Hair: Hair Envy, Obsession with Length, and the incorrect treatment of their natural hair.

Lets talk about Hair Envy,

Hair Envy is something serious for new naturals. I just knew when I started to transition to natural hair, I was going to see these loosely curled ringlets forming all through out my head. I followed 3a and 3b beauties on YouTube and idolized what I like to call "Tracee Ellis Curls." The day I realized my curls were kinky and coily, I almost gave up. How many of you experience Hair Envy? If you want to love and embrace your texture, you have to let go of Hair Envy, like today!! Stop wishing for a different texture and learn to love the texture you have.

Start following natural beauties that have a similar texture to yours so you can see a progression that is similar to yours. Here are some YouTubers that I divided by different textures, look for your texture and start following these beauties for some hair inspiration and motivation that doesn't make you dislike your beautiful God given texture.

Let's talk about Obsession with length....
Obsession with length is another obstacle that prevents many from truly loving their hair... When I started this journey, I was obsessed with my hair being long... I knew the definition  of APL and BSL before I figured out how to properly detangle my natural hair. I was so obsessed that I was constantly stretching my hair with heat which inadvertently led to heat damage and breakage early in my hair journey. The obsession with length leads to impatience, leads to the abuse of your hair, and also takes your focus on the important things, like hair health and learning to be confident in the many different stages you will go through as a natural. The minute I started to focus on the care of my strands, length retention happened as a byproduct of the proper treatment of my hair.

If you are struggling with loving your natural hair and you have let go of hair envy and got over your obsession with length, your moment to loving your natural texture can be as simply as using a simple technique that allows every curly, kinky, coily, girl's hair to strive!! Lets talk about the L.O.C Method.

L.O.C is an abbreviation for leave in conditioner, oil and cream.  The name explains how the products  should be applied as well as the order in which to apply them, making it easy-to-remember.

What sets this method apart from others is the specific order in which you apply the products which leads to maximum moisture retention.

Most natural hair frustrations like breakage, shedding, styling issues, and manageability all  lead back to the lack of moisture! This technique is great for all hair types but is perfect for type 4 curly coily naturals who usually suffer from dry and breaking strands.

This technique allows you to HYDRATE your hair with a water based leave-in and then LOCK-IN that moisture using both oil and cream products, thus preventing water/moisture from being evaporated from your hair making your hair stay moisturized  for longer.

Directions
1.Step 1 - Apply a moisturizing water-based leave-in conditioner to hair.
2.Step 2 - Apply a thin layer of oil to your hair to help lock in the moisture
3.Step 3 - Apply a butter-based, creamy moisturizer to your hair to seal that moisture in

I love using Alikay Naturals and the picture above is a great example of which products in their line to use. .

The L.O.C technique also helped me achieve the perfect twist out! Early on in my hair journey, most of my twist outs failed because they came out dry, frizzy, and tangled. I tried all these curl enhancing creams, gels, and nothing would work on my 4B/4C hair. Once I tried the L.O.C technique, all of that changed.
