Sisters with Curls: Amber and Carissa of NaturallyGG

Hello Chic-istas! I had to privilege of meeting the beautiful faces of NaturallyGG, a sister natural hair vlogging duo at the Natural Hair All Star Weekend and I am so honored to be featuring their hair story! These sisters are talented, beautiful, and have accomplished so much in the natural hair world. If you are ready for some major hair inspiration, check out the beautiful Amber and Carissa and their journey to natural hair.....

NCJ: Thank you so much for agreeing to share your story with us. So please tell me a little about yourself and your sister.

Amber: Hi, I am Amber and I will be graduating from nursing school in December. Carissa is studying to become a CPA and she is getting married in May!! We love to have fun everyday and inspire others!

NCJ: Congrats on all of these exciting upcoming events. Can you tell us about your hair before going natural? How did you feel when you first relaxed your hair.

Amber: I got a relaxer when I was really really young. Therefore, I do not remember when I first got a perm. I felt as if my relaxed hair never 'grew'. It always stayed at a certain length and it never grew past it. After doing some research, I realized that I was not retaining any length because my hair was so fragile and damaged from chemical relaxers.

NCJ: When and why did you decide to go natural?

Amber: I was inspired to go natural by watching YouTube and seeing others around me embark on an amazing journey. I was curious to know what my natural texture was like since I got a perm at such a young age. When my new growth came in, I would always be so fascinated by the curls and waves and I wanted to learn more about my natural texture. Also, some parts in my scalp would be tender and I would have scabs on the back of my head! (ouch!) I started my transition October 2010. I did my big chop after 8 months of transitioning in June 2011.

NCJ: Did you decide to go natural together? If so, How did having your sister share in your journey help you? Hinder you?

Amber: Yes, we decided to go natural together. It is a huge help having your sister share your journey with you. Going natural and learning what works for you is such a steep learning curve. It helps to have someone at the same point in your journey help you along and support you.

NCJ: Did you both slowly transition or did you two decide to do a Big Chop?

Amber: My sister Carissa big chopped after 3 months of transitioning. I big chopped after 8 months of transitioning.

NCJ: What was your biggest fear about going natural? How did you overcome it?

Amber: I can honestly say I did not have any fears about going natural. I was more so really curious about my texture.

NCJ: What are your favorite styles, favorite hair products and a couple of pictures of your best hair days.

Amber: I am a fan of simple stretched styles such as twist outs, braid outs, and bantu knot outs. With my hair already stretched, I can style my hair in so many ways..updos, ponytails, buns, etc.
We are both fans of the Shea Moisture line. Our staple leave-in is kinky curly 'knot today'. We also love coconut oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.

NCJ: The both of you have such beautiful natural hair! Do you have any advice you would give to other new naturals or those thinking of going natural?

Amber: Some advice I would give is to BE PATIENT! Be patient with growth and with learning what products and styles work for you. As I mentioned before, going natural is a steep learning curve so you may go through a lot of trial and error finding out what products and styles work for your particular hair type.
Also, refer to YouTube and blogs for style ideas and inspiration.
NCJ: Great advice!! What is the biggest lesson you have learned about yourself and your hair through your journey.

Amber: I've learned that everybody's natural hair is different!! We are all uniquely and wonderfully made. Every texture is unique and beautiful.

I wish I would've went natural a long time ago!! I had no idea how beautiful my natural hair was. I learned that I have about 4 different textures in my head and I am loving every curl, wave, and coil!

NCJ: Do you have any social forums that will allow other naturals to keep up with all of your fabulousness?

NaturallyGG: Yes, of course our YouTube channel: youtube.com/naturallygg
