Shavonne's Journey to Stellar Curls

Nappturally Chic Jere: Hello Shavonne and thank you so much for sharing your journey with us! So, tell us a little bit about yourself

Shavonne: Hey Jere'! Well, I'm 28 and in my last yr of grad school. I am a lover of all things natural and fitness inspired. I am currently working in healthcare and love to travel when I have the time.

NCJ: Tell me about your hair before going natural. How did you feel when you first relaxed your hair. Were you frustrated with your relaxed hair?

Shavonne: I got my first relaxer at 14 for my graduation and every 3 months for the next 11 yrs. I liked my hair relaxed but I didn't like how lifeless it looked and felt right after it was done. This was probably one of the main reasons I went natural.

NCJ: That was my number one complaint about getting relaxers as well. I couldn't deal with lifeless hair...lol. When and why did you decide to go natural? Did you slowly transition or did you do a Big Chop, please share your experience.

Shavonne: I got my last relaxer in February 2010, I transitioned for 2 yrs then cut the remainder relaxer out in February 2012. I went natural because I went from relaxing my hair every 3 months to just twice a year. I would see older women with relaxed hair and even though it was long it was so thin and I've always had long thick hair and I dint want to end up like any of them. Plus I would go months without a touch up and figured if I wanted it to be straight I could always do it myself.

NCJ: What was your biggest fear/concern about going natural. How did you overcome it?

Shavonne: I think my biggest fear was that I would need too much time to style and care for it. Once you make the time and know exactly what you want to do with it it doesn't take as long as you would think.

NCJ: What are your favorite hairstyles and products now that you are 100% Natural?

Shavonne: My all time favorite hairstyle is the flat twist out going straight back. Its my go to hairstyle. As well as wash and goes for the warmer months. Some of my favorite products include Olive Oil, shes Butter, Ecostyling gel and Shea Moisture Curling Cream.

NCJ: What advice would you give to other new naturals or those thinking of going natural

Shavonne: Some advice I would give is to play around with your hair through the transitioning phase, and after the big chop. Thats the only way you are going to learn what does and doesn't work for you. Also be patient if something doesn't work for you now it doesnt mean you can't try it again later on.

NCJ: What was the biggest lesson you have learned about yourself and your hair through your journey

Shavonne: The 2 biggest things I've learned are patience and just how versatile my natural hair is. I look forward to trying different styles and products and don't see myself ever going back to relaxers.
