A Curly Girl's Transition from Heat Damaged Tresses to Amazing Curls....

Nappturally Chic Jeré: Describe your hair before you started this Journey. Did you ever get a relaxer?

Lian Anderson: I've never relaxed my hair.

NCJ: Wow!!! That is extremely rare and extremely cool. So, why did you have to embarked on a hair journey?

Lian: When I discovered the flat iron and how straight it made my hair, I fell in LOVEEEE... After a while when I would wash my hair I noticed that my hair wouldn't get as curly. My curl pattern just wasn't the same. I knew I wanted to do something about it, I just didn't quite know what.

NCJ: Sounds like Heat Damage... How did you stop yourself from using the Flat Iron?

Lian: I decided to color it knowing that if I did that I would be forced to stop using so much heat or else it would fall out. The natural hairstyles I was trying didn't work so I pulled out the handy dandy flat iron. Doing that caused me even more damage. I finally started to research on YouTube and got a lot of inspiration from Naptural85. I've been loving my mane since!!! I've been doing this curly girl method since December 2012... I have about 2 inches of new growth!!! Yayy!!!

NCJ: That's wonderful!! Did you do a big chop to get rid of the heat damaged ends?

Lian: I never did a big chop, but I'm seriously considering it for the summer!!!

NCJ: What are some of your favorite curly hairstyles? Staple Products?

Lian: It has taken me a while to master natural hairstyles, but I think it's safe to say my top three are as follows: Curly Afro, A Pompadour and A Bantu Knot out with a twist pinned up... My staple products right now are As I Am's Coconut CoWash, Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie and a little bit of EcoStyler Gel.

NCJ: What advice would you give those transitioning or new naturals?

Lian: Don't give up!!!! Just because your hair isn't as curly or as kinky as others, doesn't mean your hair isn't beautiful. God wouldn't have given you, your hair if it didn't make you look your best. Be patient, show your hair a lot of tender love and care and you'll be happy with your progress!!!!

NCJ: That is wonderful advice!! Love it! What is the biggest lesson you have learned from your journey of heat-loving to curly loving tresses?

Lian: I learned that my hair was gifted to me and in order to shine I needed to embrace it. My hair journey is helping me discover what I really want in life... I know it sounds kind of corny, but it's totally true!!! I'm learning to embrace the curls God has blessed me with... I can't wait until I get all my curls back and can do wash and go's

NCJ: Thanks so much, Lian! I enjoyed learning about your healthy hair journey. You are a beautiful girl with beautiful curls!
